Vaastu: The Future of Building
  By Randy Connare

Vaastu is an ancient science dating back to 13,900 B.C.E.. The progenitor of this science was an architect named Mayan or Maayan. For thousands of years Vaastu has remained somewhat esoteric even in its native land ,India.

I first heard about Vaastu in the mid 1990’s. from the director of the School for Evolution of Humanity (SEH) Dr. Michael Mamas. I began a three year program, studying healing, meditation and many related subjects known as Vedic sciences, with Michael in 1996 in Sand Diego. Today the school is thriving locally in Asheville, NC (www.drmamas.com).

When moving to Asheville Michael and his wife built a wonderful Vaastu home on a mountain ridge top. The first time I walked through the door I was stunned. The quality of energy was so wonderful I had to know how this could possibly be. The euphoric feeling of this home stayed with me for hours after leaving.

After Visiting other Vaastu homes in north Carolina and Iowa and hearing from all amazing stories of benefits, I began a serious study of the subject. I sought out the man who is arguably the worlds expert., studied his work extensively, began working with an American architect who had studied with him and eventually lived and studied in with him in India for six weeks in early 2005.

Vaastu is the science of the manifestation of energy. Vaastu homes are aligned with the energy of the planet and cosmos. Simply put the exterior walls are aligned with the cardinal directions. Many homes face East allowing the morning sun to shine directly into the home. As the sun, moon and planets move throughout the day their effect influences and interacts with the space in very specific ways.

As energy manifests in an enclosed space energetic zones are created by Nature. A designer well versed in this science makes precise calculations, to place walls which define energy zones or rooms in the house. Location of windows, doors and the slope of the land is also considered vital to proper Vaastu. The center of the home remains open. This area ,known as the Brahmasthan, relates to the element of space. Space as we are finding from modern physics is not empty but contains unlimited energy and potential. The Brahmasthan has a distinct energetic quality that radiates throughout the house building up in the corners each with distinct characteristics. Many American homes have stairs in the center of the house which, to a house, is like having someone sit on your chest. This greatly diminishes the energy flow and can lead to fatigue, depression and disharmony in the family.

Vaastu homes are typically designed on a 9 x 9 grid creating 81 padas. The home is usually divided into zones containing 9 padas (3 x 3). Understanding the manifestation of energy and how it interacts with the cosmos let’s consider the Kitchen. The kitchen would be located in the SE corner of the home. As the sun rises in the East and moves along the South this is the part of the house that relates to the fire element or Agni in the Vedic tradition. We locate our kitchen here because subtle levels of nature support cooking and digestion in the SE or S for breakfast and dining areas. If your kitchen happened to be located in the area of the home that relates to the water element digestion would suffer leading to sickness.

All human activity is supported in this manner, other areas provide deep rest (bedrooms) areas for socializing or the NE corner, which relates to the water element, is where we would locate a study, library or meditation room.

Vaastu is the final step in green building because ecology relates to our interaction with Nature. A Vaastu home can be custom designed based on the vibration of an individual (usually the mother or “ruler of the home”), family or with other aspects of nature allowing anyone to thrive in these homes with the full support of Nature. This also is in keeping with the notion that form follows function. The form of a house should follow the deep functioning of the human physiology. If a home is built not aligned with the cardinal directions and not calculated to vibrate with Nature it still vibrates-against nature leading to adversity against all aspects of life.

The exterior of a house may be of any style one chooses. Vaastu homes may have cupolas or skylights to allow sunlight and celestial energy to fill the center of a home. This ancient knowledge is not a belief system or religious doctrine in any way. It is a science that can be experienced by anyone by visiting a Vaastu home. In a future article I will discuss the relationship between Vaastu and Yoga.
